With vision, we are bringing new life
to Skee's Diner, poised to become the region's
first Welcome & Information Center.

  Introduction

In 2007, the NWCT Chamber Education Foundation embarked on a project to create a welcome & information center for this region. This center, to be located in a prime location will greet visitors into the area seeking knowledge about regional businesses, attractions and resources.

In 2009, the foundation secured a national historic landmark - an abandoned 1920's Jerry O'Mahony diner located in Torrington, CT.  By housing the center in a newly renovated historic diner, it will add to the appeal and attract more visitors.

How does this new
welcome & information center
benefit the region?

As a starting point for travelers, visitors to the center will have immediate access to tourist information, promotional materials for area businesses and a rest room. Offering a friendly welcome, staffers will educate and encourage visitors to explore the region and take advantage of all the wonderful resources it has to offer. An informed tourist will visit area attractions and businesses adding valuable dollars to the region's economy.

Did you know that 20% of visitors to a destination generally use a welcome center, and statistics show that every $1 invested
in culture and tourism returns $9.30 in state and local revenue.

Who knew Skee’s
was built by a famous diner manufacturer?

Owned & operated by the Cisowski brothers, historic Skee’s Diner in Torrington CT opened for business at the beginning of 1946. In an era void of fast-food restaurants, business for the Cisowskis flourished as Skee’s offered quality meals served quickly, at an affordable price.

Most people won't know the name Jerry O'Mahony, but savvy diner customers will. This name represents the mark of a rare, classic diner, a mark you will find inside Skee's.

Manufactured sometime in the late 1920's, Skee's Diner was #540 off the O'Mahony assembly line and built in the classic style of the era. With steel construction, a distinctive barrel roof, marble countertop, 17 stools, and sliding entry doors, this diner defined character.

But what really stands out is the diner's interior. The windows, doors and even the ice-box are all manufactured using mahogany wood. Coated with a high gloss varnish, this magnificent interior exhibits a warm and inviting charm lacking in today's modern structures.

Although Skee's Diner served its last customer in 2001, that wasn't the end for the diner. In the fall of 2002, Skee's Diner was accepted into the National Register of Historic Places.
